ATBC members voted at the ATBC Morelia 2007 meeting that their meetings should be carbon neutral, through providing a fee dedicated to supporting regional forest restoration and/or conservation projects. For the ATBC 2017, the money collected will be allocated to an inter-municipal project in Yucatán managed by the civil organization JIBIOPUUC that, among several communal activities, is dedicated to conserving and restoring the largest tract of old-growth tropical forest remaining in the center of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Ecological and social dimensions of tropical biodiversity conservation
WELCOME TO MERIDA!
Since ancient times, humans have interacted with ecosystems and biodiversity in the tropics. This logo represents the components of this interaction: flora (idealized by the ATBC tree symbol), fauna (the Kulkukán snake descending from the pyramid) and human beings (the Chinchen Itzá El Castillo pyramid). The logo contains different symbols of the ancient Maya culture, including the Mayan numbers indicating the year 2017.
Understanding the origin, evolution, and maintenance of the extraordinary tropical biodiversity and ecosystems, continues to be a big challenge for tropical biology. Furthermore, anthropogenic effects on tropical ecosystems, and the human factors (societal, cultural, political, and economical) acting as drivers of such effects, add an enormous complexity to the urgent task of conserving, restoring, use and planning tropical ecosystems, their services and resources, within a sustainability framework. Based on the mission, objectives and principles of the ATBC, the meeting in Merida will pursue key research topics promoting the link between the ecological and social dimensions for the conservation of tropical biodiversity. The meeting will cover a wide array of basic and applied research topics on tropical biology and conservation, including: structure, dynamics and functioning of tropical ecosystems, anthropogenic effects on tropical biodiversity and ecosystems, and socio-cultural-economical drivers of such effects. The meeting will review and promote the current vision of ATBC.
