II CONFERENCE OF THE PROGRAMME ON ECOSYSTEM CHANGE AND SOCIETY
Located in the Sierra Norte, Ixtlán de Juárez, and also known in nahuatl language as a "Place of Ixtle (fiber from agave)" or as the place of the "Agave Sheet”, by the Zapotecs, is one of the most well-preserved regions in the state of Oaxaca. It is characterized by high biodiversity and for the greatest concentration of Zapotec indigenous peoples in the country. Over the years, the indigenous communities of Ixtlán have preserved a large proportion of their forests and water resources, mainly based on alternative tourism. The traditional food, community tours and activities based on the care and sustainable management of natural assets, distinguish Ixtlán, not only within the communities but also across the region.

Social-Ecological Problems
Lack of capacity for managing timber and non-timber products. Low income, migration, lack of women empowerment. These problems affect the distribution of the benefits of significant natural resources, and consequently, there is environmental degradation.

Local producers of coal, activities of forest harvesting timber and non-timber and community organizations of ecotourism.

Productive projects have been implemented based on the scheme of Social Economy as a solid tool to achieve sustainable development.

8:00-9:30 Arrival to Ixtlán
9:30-11:00 Visit to a traditional charcoal production project, hailed in the region and the state as an important project for making more efficient the use of this resource.
11:00-13:00 Visit to the Zapotec community of Ixtlán and its sustainable productive projects such as trout production and community-based tourism.
13:00-14:30 Meal
14:30-16:30 Visits to local forest conservation projects.
18:00 Return to Oaxaca City
